The hero active ingredient:
Glycolic acid
Glycolic acid is a naturally occurring alpha-hydroxy acid found in sugar cane, sugar beets, and pineapples. It has been extensively studied, tested, and reported as safe with no long-term side-effects.
Numerous clinical studies have confirmed the ability of Glycolic acid to improve acne by unblocking the skin’s clogged oil glands. Blocked oil glands are the first step in the formation of acne lesions.

Anti-Acne Program
– Maintenance Formula
Your first Maintenance Formula purchase unlocks 12 weeks after your Starter Program purchase, ensuring your skin is ready for the next phase of its transformation journey. Subsequent bottles can then be purchased at any time.
Important: Always order your next Maintenance Formula well in advance to avoid running out. Going without for more than 7 days may cause your skin to "de-acclimatise" to the glycolic acid and require you to restart the 3-Phase Program.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that is found naturally in fruits like sugar cane, sugar beets, and pineapples. It is widely used in skincare products due to its ability to exfoliate the skin and unblock clogged pores, making it an ideal choice for the treatment of acne.
Dr Loretta Ciraldo, USA Board-Certified Dermatologist, says: ‘Chemically, glycolic acid is a really nice, small molecule, which means when you put it on the skin, it can penetrate pretty readily. Whether you’re talking about a little blackhead or a big acne cyst, if you look at it under the microscope on a skin biopsy, it all starts from dead cells getting plugged up within the pores. And since glycolic helps to loosen those dead cells from each other, it can help reduce acne’.
Dr Melda Isaac, another Board-Certified Dermatologist in Washington D.C. says: ‘Glycolic acid has the ability to really get down into the follicles and loosen up any built-up sebum and proteins that could otherwise lead to blackheads and breakouts’.
Glycolic acid is the most effective of all the alpha-hydroxy acids because it has the smallest molecular weight of all AHAs. This means it can penetrate the skin more easily than other AHAs.
After much research, we chose Glycolic acid to be our ‘Hero’ ingredient!
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) used in some anti-acne preparations. While it exfoliates like glycolic acid, it also reduces the skin’s sebum production and is therefore more likely to cause skin dryness and irritation. Allergic reactions to salicylic acid are also possible, and for this reason should not be used by people allergic to aspirin or other salicylates.
Benzoyl peroxide is neither an AHA nor BHA but belongs to a family of Organic Peroxides. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory actions but is less exfoliating than AHAs and BHAs and carries a risk of side effects such as skin dryness, irritation, redness, and swelling.
Dr Mayson’s Anti-Acne Program consists of three different formula strengths. Start with Phase 1 Formula Strength for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, move up to Phase 2 Formula Strength for 6 weeks. Then move up to the Phase 3 Formula Strength and continue it until finished. However, before it runs out, order your bottle of Maintenance Formula and continue with the Maintenance Formula for ongoing improvement.
IMPORTANT: Always order your ongoing bottle of Maintenance Formula well before your current bottle runs out so that you have it at hand to continue the Program without interruption.
No anti-acne products will ever deliver instant results, and that includes Dr Mayson’s Anti-Acne Program! It usually takes around 6 weeks before you start to see a visible improvement – and that’s provided:
- You follow carefully all instructions, and
- Have stopped all skincare products and cosmetics which can block pores and worsen acne, such as:
- Oil-based foundations: use only those labelled ‘oil-free’ or ‘100% water based’.
- Powder compacts: all contain oils, so use only loose dusting powder.
- Occlusive moisturisers: many moisturisers can block the pores. Dr Mayson’s Feather-Light Hydrating Moisturiser will not block pores and worsen your acne.
- Oil-based cleansers
- Night creams, collagen creams, and elastin creams
- Toners
- Scrubs, masks and exfoliants
- Sunscreen oils, foams, and creams: use only sunscreen lotions, milk, or gel.
So, please be patient. Consistent use and following all instructions are the keys to success!
Large-molecular size oils or other occlusive agents in many cosmetics and skincare products can block the skin’s oil-producing glands and either trigger or worsen existing acne.
Therefore, before commencing Dr Mayson’s Anti-Acne Program, you must stop using all oil-containing skincare products and cosmetics, including the following:
PLEASE DO NOT commence Dr Mayson’s Anti-Acne Program until you have eliminated ALL the above products from your skincare routine. Eliminating only some and not all, can still counteract the actions of Dr Mayson’s Formula and prevent an improvement.
Absolutely not! Applying anything over Dr Mayson’s Formula before the next morning will only neutralise its actions and prevent any improvement.
VERY IMPORTANTLY, DON’T WAIT FOR IT TO FINISH BEFORE RE-ORDERING your single bottle of Maintenance Formula from our online store. Order well ahead so that you receive it before the current bottle runs out, and you have your next bottle at hand ready to continue without interruption. The reason for this is that not using any lotion for more than 7 days will allow your skin to ‘de-acclimatise’ to the glycolic acid - in which event you will probably need to restart the 3-Phase Program so that your skin can re-acclimatise to the Glycolic acid.
If you have a significant break from Dr Mayson’s Anti-Acne Program, and you then wish to resume it, we recommend you restart the Starter Program from the beginning because in the meantime, your skin will have ‘de-acclimatised’ to the glycolic acid, and resuming the Phase 3 Strength after a lengthy break could cause skin irritation and redness. With breaks of more than 7 days, it is safer to restart the entire Program from the very beginning.
Contrary to myth and popular opinion, acne-prone and acne-affected skin types don’t require the extensive range of skincare products one often sees them using. Some skincare products cannot live up to their claims, and others have the potential to worsen acne-prone skin.
In all honesty, the only types of skincare and cosmetics that acne-prone skin types should need are:
- Cleanser – must be oil-free.
- Moisturiser – only if labelled to not block pores.
- Sunscreen - only lotion, milk, or gel.
and if you prefer to finish with makeup, only:
- Oil-Free Foundation and Loose Dusting Powder
You certainly don’t need more than the above. You can do away with all the rest and at the same time, save yourself a good deal of money!
We recommend our following skincare products that have been specially formulated to not block pores and counteract the actions of Dr Mayson’s Program.
Feather-Light Hydrating Moisturiser
All are available from our online store.
- Not persisting with the treatment long enough
You must be patient. No treatment is going to produce an instant improvement. Expect to start seeing an improvement after about 6 weeks. - Adding other products
Don’t add other treatments to Dr Mayson’s Anti-Acne Program otherwise skin irritation could result and force you to pause the entire program. - Scrubbing or over-cleansing the skin
Acne is not caused by unclean skin, so scrubbing or over-cleansing won’t help. Even worse, over-zealous cleansing can compromise the skin’s protective barrier and cause irritation. - Using the wrong cosmetics on acne-prone skin
Occlusive agents in cosmetics, moisturisers, and some sunscreens can clog pores and aggravate acne, or even be the sole cause of it! Refer to our advice above. - Picking and squeezing at pimples
Squeezing pimples can drive their inflammatory contents into the skin’s deeper layers and cause scarring. - Waiting too long to start an effective treatment
Delaying an effective acne treatment not only can have profound social and psychological effects, it can also lead to disfiguring acne scarring. - Over-using or under-using a treatment
Always use the treatment exactly as instructed.
Over-use won’t improve the acne any sooner or better. Instead, it could cause irritation, redness, dryness, and flaking which will force you to pause the program and wait some time before restarting it.
Under-use by forgetting it, or stopping it when the skin looks clearer, will not allow your skin to improve.
Spot Treatments are unwise. Always apply the lotion to the entire face, not just the area showing pimples. Spot-treatments don’t address the adjacent areas where other pimples could be brewing. - Stopping the treatment as soon as the acne starts to clear up
The key to clearer skin is ongoing maintenance to prevent the return of acne.
